Spelling Bee

A Spelling Bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. To compete, contestants must memorize the spellings of words as written in dictionaries, and recite them accordingly.

The concept is thought to have originated in the United States, and spelling bee events, along with variants, are now also held in some other countries around the world.

The Spelling Bee Competition at Magallanes School is a tradition that started with Miss Maribel Vazquez Coss and has continued throughout the years as one of the students´ most beloved activities, particularly with our youngest students.

The main objectives of the competition are:

  • To help students practice their grammar skills as they don’t just have to memorize the spelling of the words but also the meaning
  • And use of each of them within sentences.
  • To enhance their vocabulary as well as their pronunciation.
  • To develop cognitive skills such as the ability to handle pressure and enhance memory, allowing the participant to acquire better learning tools.
  • To further boost confidence and built character in a competitive environment.

Our competition is divided into three moments throughout the year.

Firstly, students prepare for months along with their teacher to learn, recognize and spell the vocabulary given during the first trimester.

Having practiced the vocabulary for months, there is a second process before the competition in which students constantly rehearse to be ready for the finals. It is during this moment when finalists are selected after a semifinal that is held in the classroom.

Lastly, the finalists are faced in a competition held in our school to determine the winner through a traditional Spelling Bee Contest which is judged by a chair of both internal and external judges.

In addition to all the main objectives Spelling Bee has to offer, students who participate in Spelling Bee Competitions, not only increase their vocabulary but also develop cognitive abilities and learning strategies which can be applied to any field later in life.

They equip themselves with the tools to reach a higher writing level and the ability to use it more proficiently.

Their knowledge generally helps them to become great readers as well. It helps them enjoy a wide range of literature and reading material often beyond their years.
